What types of hair extensions are available?
Clip-in Extensions: These are temporary extensions that can be easily clipped onto your hair. They are a popular choice for occasional wear or for those who want to change their hairstyle temporarily. They can be attached easily without any professional help.
Fusion / Pre-bonded Extensions: With this method, small sections of hair extensions are pre-bonded with a keratin or adhesive material and then fused to your natural hair using heat or an adhesive bonding agent. This process requires a professional to fuse the extensions.
Micro-link/Loop Extensions: These extensions use small metal or silicone rings that are clamped or looped onto your natural hair and the hair extension strand, creating a secure bond. This process requires a professional assistance.
Can I wash my hair extensions?
Hair extensions can be washed, but as they don’t have a natural supply of oils, you won’t need to wash them very often. Instead, it’s much safer to revive them with some serum which will help to replenish any moisture lost to heat styling and will totally refresh your set. You’ll only need to do this every few months but it’ll help to soften the hair, detangle the lengths and add loads of shine.
Can I colour my hair extensions?
Human hair extensions can be dyed though we recommend you leave it to the professionals. This is because it’s really important to ensure the dye is applied in the right way and that the base shade can be changed to the final shade result you want to achieve. If you consult an experienced professional to dye your clip-in human hair extensions, please ensure the guidelines that come with the dye are followed and also it is strongly recommended that strand test is completed first.
Are hair extensions damaging to my natural hair?
When applied and cared for properly, hair extensions should not cause damage to your natural hair. However, there are certain factors to consider to minimize the potential for damage:
Application Method: The method used to attach the hair extensions can impact the potential for damage. Improper installation, excessive tension, or using low-quality adhesive or bonding materials can lead to hair breakage or traction alopecia. It's essential to have extensions applied by a trained and experienced professional who follows proper techniques.
Weight and Length: Heavy or excessively long extensions can put stress on your natural hair, leading to strain and breakage. It's important to choose extensions that are appropriate for your hair type and length. Consult with a stylist to determine the ideal weight and length of extensions for your hair.
How do I store my hair extensions?
The Hair Actual hair extensions are made with real human hair, it’s important to take extra care of them – that way, they’ll last as long as possible. A simple way to do this is by storing them correctly; use a hair net to keep your hair extensions together. Better yet, why not just pop them back into the bag and box that they arrived in.
What is the difference between synthetic hair and natural human hair extensions?
Natural Hair Extensions blend seamlessly with your own hair, making it difficult to tell the difference. These can be styled just like your own hair — you can curl, straighten, and colour it.
With proper care, natural hair extensions can last many years.
Requires the same level of care as natural human hair, including regular shampooing, conditioning, and detangling.
Ideal for those who want a high degree of versatility and a natural look.
Synthetic hair often lacks the natural look and feel of human hair.
They typically do not allow as much air flow to the scalp as natural hair does. This can lead to discomfort in hot or humid conditions and contribute to scalp irritation or odor.
Generally, they last a few months before they begin to wear out. High heat from blow dryers, curling irons, or straighteners can damage synthetic fibers unless they are specifically designed to withstand heat.
They can be washed less frequently and sometimes loose their shape / style.
They become frizzy and tangle easily, and the fibers may break of fray with regular wear and tear.
Can I wear hair extensions if I have fine or thinning hair?
Yes, hair extensions are meant to enhance your look thereby taking care of any kind of hair thinning, hair loss, balding, alopecia or any other kind of hair related issues. However, remember, while hair extensions can provide temporary improvement in the appearance of thinning hair, they are not a permanent solution for hair loss.
How do I care for and maintain my permanent hair extensions?
Avoid excessive pulling or tugging on the extensions, as this can cause stress on your natural hair. Follow the recommended guidelines for washing, brushing, and styling your extensions. Regular maintenance appointments are also important to ensure the extensions are adjusted or moved up as your natural hair grows.
Can I swim or sleep with my permanent hair extensions?
Swimming: Human hair extensions can typically withstand swimming, but it's important to take precautions to protect them. Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to create a barrier between your hair and the pool or ocean water. Avoid exposing the extensions to excessive chlorine or saltwater, as it can dry out the hair and cause damage.
Sleeping: Avoid sleeping on the bonded areas of the extensions, instead either braid or bun your hair before sleeping to prevent any kind of tangling or damage to the natural roots of your hair.
Are there any specific products or tools I should use or avoid with hair extensions?
Always use wide tooth combs, soft bristle brushes and heat styling tools with moderate heat settings for your hair extensions. Avoid using products with sulphates or alcohol, oily or heavy styling products, metal or fine-toothed combs as well as excessive heat as they result in damaging the hair extension bonds and can even lead to excessive dryness, frizz or damage to the hair extensions.
How do I tell if I’m buying quality hair extensions?
Sometimes first impressions do count! The easiest way to tell if you’re buying genuine natural hair clip-ins is at first glance. Natural hair extensions look natural and healthy in appearance – this is all down to the cuticles.
Synthetic hair clip-ins often undergo over-processing and ‘cuticle stripping’, where the cuticles are removed chemically. Some sellers will hide this by using a lot of silicone at the end of the process, which makes the hair seem soft and shiny. However, as soon as the extensions are washed, the silicone will come off and the hair will become tangled, dry, and difficult to use.
Simply looking at pricing can also help you gauge if you’re buying natural human hair extensions. What may seem like a bargain may actually end up costing you more in the long run. This is because cheaper human hair alternatives won’t boast the same fantastic quality as Natural hair and you’ll end up having to replace them after a couple of uses. Generally, if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is!
